Children’s Eyecare
Your child’s sight is precious.
At Faith Donaldson Optometrists we pride ourselves on providing family eye care.
1 in 5 children have an undetected eye problem, often accompanied by warning signs such as sitting too near to the television, or holding a book close up.
When should children have their eyes tested?
Children can have their eyes tested at any age. We recommend testing children as early as possible because poor vision can lead to learning problems. The earlier a problem is detected the higher the chance of successful treatment, children’s eyes are fully developed by the time they are eight years old so it is important to correct any problems before then.
Children typically have no understanding of what their vision should be like and often struggle in school with undiagnosed vision problems. We recommend that children have an eye examination every year from at least preschool age – especially if one or both parents need glasses.
Our eye examinations are tailored to the age of the child using specialised equipment so they do not have to be able to read or talk to be able to perform an eye examination. We love to make this a fun and enjoyable experience, using cartoons and picture charts to interest even the youngest patients.
Children’s eyes are continually developing and so it is important all children are tested at least before primary school and regularly thereafter. All children’s eye examinations include retinal photography and are free under the NHS, up to the age of 18 years while in full time education.
Children & Sport
Don’t forget your children when it comes to sport. Sports such as rugby and football can easily throw up dirt and grit into the eyes, squash or tennis can risk orbital injuries and many schools and clubs now insist children who wear glasses use sports goggles to protect their eyes during sport. We offer a wide range of sports prescription wraparounds.
If your child enjoys swimming, a pair of prescription swimming goggles will help protect their eyes against over-exposure to chlorine and enable them to see clearly. These are adjustable and so will continue to fit as your child grows.
We also fit contact lenses to children as young as seven, many opting for contact lenses for a lifestyle choice, whilst others will benefit from the specialist myopia management lenses.
Children in the Sun
Remember to protect your child’s eyes in the sun; the lens in their eyes are clearer than adults and so actually allow even more of the harmful UV rays into the back of their eyes. We provide prescription sunglasses in a wide range of styles.
Children’s Eyewear
If your child requires any glasses, we want them to be excited and happy about wearing them. We are delighted to offer on trend styles for children and teens which are free with our NHS voucher scheme.
Alternatively, for an additional charge, they can select frames from our other exciting children’s range, all available at an affordable price from designers such as Nike, Rayban and Marvel Superheros.
Our team will help your child select the best choice for them.
